Spay & Neuter For A Better Future
Dr. Murphy's "Spay A Stray" Fund
This fund is now administered by the Cherished Cats Rescue Alliance. We are pleased that they agreed to take it over and know that they will continue to help stray cats in need. Donations to this fund should be now be directed to the Cherished Cat Rescue Alliance. More information about CCRA can be found here.
Dr. Matthew Murphy of Keystone Mobile Veterinary Services was the first veterinarian to collaborate with SUN P.E.T.S. to provide mobile spay, neuter, and vaccination clinics in our area on a routine schedule. Over the past two years, his day-long clinics, scheduled by SUN P.E.T.S. every other month provided low-cost services to scores of companion and free-roaming cats in the Susquehanna Valley.
Working with several animal welfare organizations throughout the state for more than a decade, Dr. Murphy refined his processes to create routine results of as many as 100 cats a day through his mobile surgery unit. Dr. Murphy died tragically in late September 2013, leaving a vast void in the animal welfare field.
In his honor, the SUN P.E.T.S. “Spay-A-Stray” fund has been re-dedicated as “Dr. Murphy’s Spay-A-Stray Fund” as a permanent memorial to honor this inspirational veterinarian who made the SUN P.E.T.S. dream of a mobile clinic a reality.
The “Spay-A-Stray” fund was created last year when we realized that numerous clients and volunteers were willing to assist our mission by trapping, neutering and releasing (TNR’ing) homeless cats on their property, in their barns, and in neighborhood colonies to reduce the number of unwanted cats and kittens – especially those born outside to ferals, strays, and former pet cats that have been dumped.
Many of these animals live in large colonies supported by caretakers stretched to the limit of their resources providing food, shelter and other care on a daily basis. At the mobile clinics, clients pay the standard fees for each cat, and SUN P.E.T.S. only covers unexpected costs.
Many clients have told us that they could Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) more homeless cats, but just cannot afford to pay for these services for multiple outside cats. Your donation helps them do all they can for homeless cats by subsidizing the costs to spay, neuter and vaccinate them.
You can become a Sponsor of Dr. Murphy’s Spay-A-Stray Fund by earmarking (“ear-tipping”) your donation to assist clients who are committed to trapping, spaying, neutering, and vaccinating multiple outside cats. These donations are used judiciously on a case-by-case basis.
Thank you for your generosity in honor, and in memory of Dr. Matthew Murphy, an unassuming but remarkable leader who paved the way for SUN P.E.T.S.’ expanded services to so many animals in this region.
